Hydrogen energy [ Return towards  Hydrogen Planet  ]

“Today, humanity is faced with a dual challenge: an environmental challenge and an energy challenge.”

Jean-Louis Étienne, explorer

Faced with the steady increase in the demand for energy and climate change, countries are setting up energy policies to better use energy and economize it; limiting CO2 emissions and developing alternative energy sources.

One of the major challenges in the upcoming years is to enable each individual to have access at all times to the energy he or she needs, while respecting and preserving the environment. Hydrogen is one of the solutions.

Produced from all sources of energy, hydrogen makes it possible to not be dependent on a specific source and to therefore offer “energy independence”. Used in a fuel cell, it produces electricity anywhere in a clean and silent way.

Hydrogen energy will make it possible first of all to supply electricity to places where there is no electricity network. Then, the car is undoubtedly one of the application areas for the fuel cell that represents the most potential. In about 10 years, the first cars will run on hydrogen, without any greenhouse gas emissions or noise. Their use will be as simply as with the cars we drive today.

CO2 and the greenhouse effect

The significant increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere was demonstrated during the major conferences on the environment (Kyoto, Bali, Grenelle of the Environment…). In 2007, the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) confirmed the seriousness of the threat that climate change weighs on our planet. If nothing is done, the average temperature of the earth’s surface could increase by 1.5 to 6°C by the end of the century.
